Biography
Milly Katana is a distinguished HIV activist and advocate who has dedicated her life to improving the well-being and rights of people living with HIV. Her journey began as a student leader at Makerere University, where she showcased her leadership and passion for social justice. She co-founded the National Guidance and Empowerment Network for People Living with HIV (NGEN), an organization she established to address the challenges faced by individuals with HIV in Uganda, particularly in areas with limited access to antiretroviral treatment. Through NGEN, Milly has offered essential support, created safe spaces for sharing experiences, and promoted community empowerment, significantly enhancing the quality of life for affected individuals.
Her influence extends beyond Uganda, as she serves on the board of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria (GFATM). In this role, she has contributed to shaping global strategies on HIV prevention, treatment, and care, drawing from her deep understanding of the issues faced by people living with HIV worldwide. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Milly demonstrated resilience by establishing collaborative spaces to ensure the continuity of healthcare services amidst disruptions. Her unwavering commitment to safeguarding the health and rights of those affected by HIV has earned her widespread respect and recognition, making her a leading figure in the fight against HIV and a deserving candidate for awards like the FIERCE Award.
