Biography

Professor Nelson K. Ssewankambo is a renowned physician-scientist and academic leader whose work has significantly influenced the development of African medical education and research. As the former Principal of Makerere University College of Health Sciences, he championed the movement to ensure that African health systems are led by Africans, grounded in evidence, and recognized on the global stage. His leadership extends beyond Uganda, serving as President of the Uganda National Academy of Sciences and Vice President of the Network of African Science Academies, where he acts as a vital link between Africa’s scientific community and international policy platforms. His contributions have been acknowledged through honorary degrees from Johns Hopkins University and McMaster University, as well as the Grand Silver Medal from the Karolinska Institute.
With expertise in Internal Medicine and Clinical Epidemiology, Prof. Ssewankambo has dedicated over 18 years to advancing Knowledge Translation methodologies. His work has been instrumental in strengthening health systems, particularly in resource-limited settings, by ensuring that research effectively informs national health policies. Central to his scholarship is a commitment to reforming medical education; he advocates for adaptive curricula and innovative training approaches to develop health leaders who see research as essential to sustainable health system improvement. His lifelong efforts continue to shape a new generation of health professionals who prioritize research and evidence-based practice as strategic tools for health advancement.
